One thing that all members of the human species
have in common is that we all face private trouble and personal loss. Natural disasters and personal losses visit us
all, and when it happens we usually need help from our parents, our children, other family, neighbors, friends, etc.
Financially disadvantaged individuals, most especially children, particularly need help, as they are often without the financial
wherewithal and personal support group as listed above.
Estimates indicate that approximately 120,000 people living
in San Luis Obispo County in California lack funds to meet basic living expenses. When these individuals and families
experience a fire, which can destroy everything they own, a family breakup, a death in the family, or other personal disaster,
they may quite possible lack the financial means to recover from their losses.
Disadvantaged persons who suffer
financial and emotional distress and loss often turn to churches, schools, shelters, service organizations, and other "helpful"
community entities. Currently in the immediate area, these community entities do have an organization or location to
which they can themselves refer their clients in need for immediate support and the void is tremendous. A Child's
Harvest Foundation is here to fill such a void and to help the children and families in these communities when needed.
Children are the neediest of all. Whether a disaster is widespread or localized to one family, the people who
most often need help in such situations are children. For example, the Adventist Community Services, one of the
largest non-governmental organizations that provide disaster relief, reports that the biggest need for clothing after a disaster
is for children's underwear. Experience deomonstrates that when small children face upheaval, even those who have
been toilet trained for years, they will regress to the point where they need frequent changes of underclothing. In
addition, children need toys, books, and other items that not only make them feel human but give them comfort and hope in
times of crisis.
A Child's Harvest Foundation supplies clothing, food, blankets, books and toys to those in
need. In each case aid has individual specific meaning which is that each person recieves the help that he or she needs
and wants. Our primary criterion for aid is those recipients who are financially disadvantaged individuals who need
help because of personal loss, tragedy or disaster. The program does not discriminate based on race, religion, ethnicity,
or and factor other than need and lose.
